Elevating the floor in a building or other environment, also known as raised floor, creates an open space for the passage of electrical cables, voice and data lines, as well as hydraulic pipes or air conditioning ducts. The technical floor is also known as raised floor in some circles. Raised floors made of steel plates and structures are the most recommended and currently used in modern office environments. The plates are filled with lightweight cellular concrete on the inside, which makes them ideal for use in high-traffic areas.
Generally speaking, steel raised floors can be divided into two categories: the first category includes raised floors for commercial spaces such as offices and boardrooms, while the second category includes raised floors for technical spaces such as data centers and racks, as well as nobreaks rooms, battery storage rooms, and electrical power distribution rooms.
Models with raised floor systems
Raised floors in the first category are composed primarily of three components: the plate, the base, and the crosshead (or crossmember). The base and crosspiece set is referred to as a pedestal, and it is responsible for raising the raised floor. Pedestals can be manufactured at a variety of heights to meet the specific requirements of each project.
The upper part of the pedestal (as shown above) is made of galvanized steel and is composed of two steel plates: the upper plate and the reinforcement plate. These plates are welded to the 3/4-inch threaded spindle, which is used to attach the pedestal to the base with a nut.
It is the base of a raised floor pedestals that is made up of a steel plate welded to a galvanized square tube. Its purpose is to fit the crosshead of the raised floor pedestal as well as to distribute the load transferred from the raised floor to the ground.
Having dimensions of 600x600x33mm, the raised floor tiles are manufactured in two steel panels, with the upper one being welded to the lower plate stamped and filled internally with lightweight cellular concrete, and the lower one being welded to the upper one. Several types of coverings, such as carpet, vinyl, and laminate, can be applied to the plates, which are screwed into the pedestals (as shown in the illustration below).
Raised floors in the second category are composed primarily of four components: the plate, the base, the crosshead, and the stringer (or joist). A major difference between the two categories is the requirement for greater resistance to heavy equipment in technical areas. As a result, raised floor plates are no longer supported on pedestals at their four ends, but are instead supported on stringers running around their perimeter and screwed to raised floor pedestals.
