Teenagers aged 10-18, participated in turn-based classes in the American Association of Woodturners(AAW) 36th Annual International Symposium held in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in June. It was the first session following the symposium in 2019.

Woodcraft donated to face guards and other supplies for instructors. Other sponsors include JET/POWERMATIC wood slab table stands and lathes; Crown Hand Tools, tools; Teknatool International, chucks; Easy Wood Tools, tools as well as Craft Supplies USA, project tools and supplies.

The Youth Turning Program was introduced in 2005 by AAW in 2005 in order to bring youngsters to woodturning by offering hands-on opportunities to master the craft in a classroom setting. It is not necessary to have any experience however, participants need to be accompanied by an adult at the symposium.

"Woodcraft is pleased that youth were again able to learn the woodturning craft from experts in the exciting atmosphere of the AAW International Symposium," the company's President and CEO Jack Bigger stated. "Support for youth turning programs is an investment in the future of woodworking."

"The overall attendance for the AAW symposium was down, which we assume in some part was due to COVID and high transportation costs," Linda Britt, AAW Board Director of Youth and Special Programs Chair, stated. "We were able to permit youngsters to participate in any of the 10 turns as they would like, however we also opened the classes for attendees of the symposium, many of which were spouses who had never been able to turn. The addition of this program was so well-loved that we're planning to repeat the same thing once more next year in Louisville, Kentucky, in 2023.."

Three young people were each given the latheand tools used during the class.
