Smolder has emerged as a mainstream pick in the LCK Challengers League (LCK CL). Nongshim Red Force's Hein-seong "Vital" Haesung and Seok-hyun "Paduk" Park recorded back-to-back penta-kills with Smolder in a match on Sunday. As teams get used to utilizing Smolder, the champion disruptor is becoming more and more dominant.
Players are learning how to counter Smolders as much as they are learning how to use them well. The most prominent counter pick is Kaiser. In the LoL Champions Korea (LCK), Hanwha Life Esports' Do-hyun "Viper" Park completely ruined Nongshim Red Force's use of Smolder.
The LCK CL match between Nongshim and Peerless on Nov. 27 also featured a Smolder vs. Caesar composition. Nam "Diablo" Dae-geun picked Kaisa to counter Heinsung's Smolder. For the first half of the game, FierceX was able to capitalize on Kaisa's strength in difficult situations, but the tide turned in the fourth dragon battle.
In the press room after the game, Heinsung said that the rush combination was a counter to Smolder. He said, "Kaisa is a good champion to eat Smolder, but the direction of the overall combination is important. Smolder's mobility is good, but if he gets hit with a CC, his skill is broken," he said.
DRX's counter to Smolder was the Sena-Seraphin (Sese) combination. They countered with the Setha-Seraphin 바카라 combo after losing Smolder to Tae-yoon "TaeYoon" Kim in the third set against Guangdong Freecs. The strength of both champions is their healing abilities. DRX pulled off the upset thanks to their advantage in the late-game sustain battle.
DRX's Ye-hoo "Yehoo" Kang said, "In the scrim, I had a good track record when I picked three or four combinations against Smolder. Even in the scrim, I didn't lose the value fight because Smolder was big and the Sesae duo wasn't big," he said, adding, "I didn't feel much pressure today because I thought I could win if I went to the end of the game."
Kang Ye-hoo said that the rush combination with Bye and the Sese combination could be a counter to Smolder. He suggested using the bye to rush into the enemy lane and catch Smoulder in one hit, and using the sustain of the three or four combos to build up immunity to Smoulder's "super-powered fire breath (Q).
